Press Release

/
Galerie Gilla Lörcher | Contemporary Art is very pleased to present „XXX“, a group show with Valentin Carron, Nicolas Chardon and John Cornu.
X X X brings together three contemporary artists, without a theme. Valentin Carron, Nicolas Chardon, and John Cornu all know each other and have either exhibited or collaborated together.
Their works – whether figurative or abstract, serial, dark or even authoritarian, pictorial or sculptural–revisit forms, codes, and motifs from twentieth-century art history.

Valentin Carron
One of the most important Swiss artists of his generation, Valentin Carron has developed an oeuvre which combines central traditions of contemporary art making, while questioning them in terms of their current meaning. In this way, he includes approaches to appropriation in his work as well as Pop Art traditions, the sociological search for clues and post-studio production.
Born in 1977 in Martigny (Switzerland). Valentin Carron lives and works in Martigny.
His work has been exhibited in numerous solo shows: at the Kunsthalle in Bern, the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, the Conservera Centro de Arte Contemporáneo in Ceutí/Murcia, the Kunsthalle Zürich, the Swiss Institute of New York, the Chisenhale Gallery in London (with Mai-Thu Perret), the Centre d’Art Contemporain in Geneva (with Mai-Thu Perret) the Fri Art à Fribourg; and took part in many group shows: at the SculptureCenter, New York, the mudac, Lausanne, the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Zurich, the Aargauer Kunsthaus in Aarau, the Consortium de Dijon, France, the Rubell Family Collection in Miami, the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts of Lausanne, the CAPC – musée d’art contemporain de Bordeaux, France.
Valentin Carron represented Switzerland at the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013.

Valentin Carron is represented by Gallery Kamel Mennour (Paris).

Nicolas Chardon
“What sort of radicalism are we talking about? That of modern avant-gardes?
Here, when I speak of radicalism, it’s more an image of radicalism in painting. The moment I start painting is when my position on this question is the most evident. I start painting on an object, a painting, that by its very form has already resolved many of the formal issues of modernism: the fabric is a support for colors, a pattern a grid what’s more, and even performs a movement by deforming the grid. The action of painting is a second phase. And this phase is truly an after thought in terms of avant-garde ambitions. We can say that my painting is detached from them, even if it still manifests the symptoms. If we consider that distancing strategies are characteristic of modernism, we also need to see that the distancing in my work the deformation of the grid comes from a traditional act shared by all painters: stretching a canvas. In my case, radicalism is not heroic but rather everyday, archetypal.” Nicolas Chardon / Judicaël Lavrador. Index, in «Catalogue. Nicolas Chardon», 2004. Revolver, Archiv Für Aktuelle Kunst.
Born in 1974 in Clarmart (France), Nicolas Chardon lives and works in Paris. He was a resident at the Villa Medici, Academie de France in Rome in 2008 - 2009. He is co-founder of the alternative School BABA, Paris, and co-founder of the publishing house Connoisseurs. Since 2012 Nicolas Chardon is professor of painting at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Lyon.
His work is regularly shown in France and abroad and present in important private and public collections, such as The Center Pompidou – National Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the MUDAM in Luxembourg, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Strasbourg, the Museum of Fine Arts in Nantes, the Voorlinden Museum in Wassenaar (NL), the Meritz Foundation in Seoul, the Marta Collection in Herford and EPO in Munich.
In addition to his solo projects, he has also participated in numerous museum group exhibitions, including La Force de l’Art at the Grand Palais in Paris, Le Noir est une couleur at the Fondation Maeght, Painting / Malerei at the Martin Gropius Bau in Berlin, Villa Aperta at the Villa Medici, Seconde main at the Museum of Modern Art of the City of Paris, Black Light at the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Karlshrue, Tableaux at Le Magasin in Grenoble, Dystotal at the Ludwig Forum in Aachen, Revolution in Red-Yellow-Blue at Marta Herford. In 2018 the Kunsthalle Bremerhaven offered him his first institutional solo show in Germany.

Nicolas Chardon is represented by Galerie Jean Brolly (Paris) and Galerie van Gelder (Amsterdam).

John Cornu
John Cornu works with an aesthetic inherited from minimalism and modernism (monochromy, seriality, modularity), while maintaining a strong relation to context (historical, architectural, societal) and a form of contemporary romanticism (a penchant for degradation, blindness, violence, and destruction).
With an interest for modern ruins, coercive systems, logics of power, and the passage of time, the artist imbues his productions with an atmosphere at once poetic and without compromise. Whether sculptural, pictorial, or installation-based, they blend paradoxical forces, setting up a multiplicity of meanings and readings.
Born in 1976 in Seclin (France), John Cornu lives and works in Rennes and Paris.
His work has been shown in numerous solo and group shows at: Palais de Tokyo and Maison rouge (Paris, FR), Mains d’œuvres (Saint-Ouen, FR), CNEAI (Chatou, Paris, FR), Galerie Edouard-Manet (Gennevilliers, FR), 40mcube/Hub Hug (Rennes, FR), Parvis Centre d’art contemporain (Ibos, FR), Bel ordinaire (Pau, FR), CACN-Centre d’art contemporain (Nîmes, FR), Les Trinitaires (Metz, FR), BF15 (Lyon, FR), EAC–Espace de l’Art Concret (Mouans-Sartoux, FR), BBB centre d’art et Abattoirs–Frac Midi-Pyrénées (Toulouse, FR), Musée des beaux-arts in Rennes and Calais (FR), Lyon Biennale (FR), Busan Biennale South Korea (KR), Biennale d`art contemporain de Jukoutsk (RUS), Attic (Brussels, BE), Académie royale des Beaux-Arts (Brussels, BE), Les Brasseurs (Liège, BE), SCVA–Sainsbury Center for Visual Arts (Norwich, UK), CIRCA (Montréal, CA), MACRO–Museo di Arte contemporanea di Roma (Rome, IT), Chambre Blanche (Québec, CA), ZQM (Berlin, Germany), and the Nuit Blanche in Montreal (CA).
